A Tesla Model Y with a Mario Kart body wrap has been snapped while parked at Orlando International Airport in Florida.

The airport posted a series of photos of the car to their Facebook account, where it picked up more than 1700 likes.

The Model Y came kitted out with a bright red roof, door handles, wing mirrors and bonnet, a blue front bumper and side skirts and yellow wheels, just like the portly plumber’s signature go-kart.

The mirrors and bonnet were complete with the letter ‘M’, leaving no doubt as to the reference.

The owner even had a banana peel plush perched on the dashboard, ready to hurl at any drag racing drivers.

The airport added the pun-filled caption: “When flight tickets are more appeeling than driving, you have so mushroom to stretch out on the plane, the snacks are Toadally awesome, and overall, you’re just tired of walking all the way to Bowser’s castle — so you’re like ‘Let’s-a-go!’”

The owner of the vehicle and their destination are unknown.

Facebook users were full of praise for the unusual car.

“So cool. I know a few people that would love this car,” wrote one person.

“Oh my gosh! This is the cutest car!” added another.

A third joked: “8 year old me loves this”

Another person added that they would “drive it in a heartbeat”.

Tesla founder Elon Musk has repeatedly flirted with the idea of allowing drivers to play Mario Kart in their Teslas for real.

In 2018, he claimed to have made a bid for the game to be added to Tesla’s dashboard console but said he failed to convince Nintendo to sign off on the deal.

“How about a version of Mario Kart where you can play against random people who are also charging their car at the moment?” Musk was asked on Twitter.

“We tried,” he replied. “Nintendo won’t license it to us.”

The billionaire floated the idea once again in 2020, this time asking whether any Twitter users had the skills to develop an augmented reality game that Tesla owners could play while driving.

“Anyone think they can get a good multiplayer Minecraft working on Teslas?” he tweeted.

“Or maybe create a game that interacts virtually with reality like Pokemon Go while driving safely? Like a complex version of Pac-man or Mario Kart?”

Users weren’t so keen on the idea.

“That’s a dangerous game, if you are driving you should be driving and nothing else, not playing games, not watching films, not on a phone,” one replied.

“You are risking your own and other people’s lives being that irresponsible.”

“To be frank, ‘while driving safely,’ just isn’t enough for me,” added another.
