One of Australia’s most popular hot hatches is about to get a lot more performance.

Volkswagen has detailed the new Golf GTI TCR, a limited edition model due to land in Australia in July.

Volkswagen Australia has built 300 examples of the TCR, which is based on the current Golf that will be replaced by the end of the year.

The TCR is priced from $51,490 (before on-road costs), which is about $5000 more than the regular GTI version.

But with the extra spend comes a big boost in power. The TCR’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine makes an impressive 213kW, which matches the more hardcore Golf R and is 33kW more than the regular GTI. But torque has been reduced to 350Nm, which is 20Nm less than the regular GTI.

The improved power figure helps the TCR sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, which is a 0.6 second improvement on the current GTI.

The TCR is equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch auto that drives the front wheels.

Other unique touches include a modified exhaust with a louder note, while the increased performance is kept in check by improved brakes.

VW has also added several cosmetic upgrades including black side mirror covers and roof. Inside there is a sports steering wheel with red trim that extends to the seat belt and floor mats. The gear shifter and door trim is covered in Alcantara faux suede.

The next-generation Golf GTI is expected to launch at the end of the year, but don’t go looking for big performance upgrades.

The new GTI carries over the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder (180kW/370Nm) from the current version.

The real changes happen on the tech front. The new hatch’s interior comes in for a serious makeover, starting with two huge screens — a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and 10-inch infotainment screen.

For added protection, there is a wide range of active safety tech such as lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking.
