Toyota Australia has issued a safety recall for nearly 24,000 of its popular vehicles over faulty brakes fears.

The major car manufacturer is concerned the fault applies to Diesel HiLux and Fortuner vehicles made between June 2018 and December 2018.

“Within the brake booster of involved vehicles, the strength of the resin piston could degrade due to improper moulding conditions during production,” the company said in its recall.

“If this were to occur, repeated operation of the brake pedal may cause the piston to break, potentially causing loss of braking assist and therefore increasing the vehicle stopping distance.

“For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will inspect the vehicle and if applicable, replace the brake booster assembly free of charge.”

The replacement is expected to take about three hours but anyone who owns this vehicle is urged to contact their local dealer for timing information.

Toyota says it will contact the owners of these vehicles by text but they are also asked to check the detailed list of vehicles the fault applies to on the recall website here.
