Tesla to start production of the Cybertruck in 2023
The long wait for Tesla’s futuristic electric ute could soon be over as insiders reveal when production is due to start.
The wait could soon be over for Tesla’s new electric ute.
Tesla’s long-awaited Cybertruck is due to enter production next year according to a recent report by Reuters. The outlet cites two sources with knowledge of the company’s plans.
Elon Musk has previously said the electric car maker is readying its new Texas facility to build the Cybertruck with early production starting in the middle of 2023 before ramping up in the following months.
If Tesla can stick to this schedule it would put it two years behind its initial launch date and trailing rivals such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T that are already in the hands of customers in the US.
There is bad news for Aussies wanting to get their hands on the futuristic looking Cybertruck.
Locals can no longer order the vehicle on the company’s website and the huge pent up demand in the US would likely push any Aussie deliveries out several years if it comes here at all.
Australia’s crash test authority, ANCAP, has previously told News Corp Australia the Cybertruck’s angular design and stainless steel construction could pose a heightened risk to other road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists.
By contrast the smooth, egg-shaped Tesla Model Y set a new safety benchmark during an ANCAP assessment earlier this year.
Tesla also faces a multitude of new rivals wanting a share of the electric ute and pick-up truck market.
Chinese behemoth Geely has laid out plans to launch an electric ute, with a new brand called Radar.
The company has several major brands under its umbrella including Volvo and niche brands such as Lotus.
Geely also has experience with electric cars through its Polestar brand that launched this year in Australia to instant success.
Radar plans to build a new electric dual-cab ute called RD6 with more than 600km of driving range.
Ford’s new Ranger ute has been built with a future electrified version in mind. The Blue Oval has no immediate plans for a zero-emissions Ranger but the vehicle’s platform can accommodate it.
Volkswagen’s soon to be launched Amarok is built on the same platform as the Ranger and will go electric in the future.
Karsten Intra, CEO of VW Commercial Vehicles, said it was likely some form of electrified Amarok would arrive during the vehicle’s next product cycle.
“Electrification is a subject in all the different fields. What we can see in that pick-up business is there is popping up a lot of demand towards electrification. This car is actually made for electrification. What we have to do now is we have to look into the markets,” he said.
