Suzuki expands SUV range with new off-road focused Jimny
JAPANESE brand is bring back its little off-roader along with modern technology and retro charm.
WEEKEND warriors rejoice, the Jimny is back.
Suzuki has confirmed that it will add the pint-sized Jimny off-roader to its local lineup from the start of 2019.
The baby bush-basher is experiencing its first major update in 20 years, adding modern technology and safety features.
However, in contrast to the addition of some mod-cons the Jimny still retains its retro charm thanks to its boxy styling, while underneath the little four-wheel drive is still supported by a simple ladder frame chassis.
Suzuki has moved the Jimny into the present day by adding creature comforts like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a full array of airbags, high beam assist and the addition of stability control move the Jimny into the 21st century.
Staying true to its off-road bias the Jimny will be equipped with four-wheel drive while a reduction gear will maximise the torque at low revs from the 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine — while hill descent controls are ideal for tackling tougher terrain.
The Jimny’s chief engineer Hiroyuki Yonezawa says the company tried to stay true to the previous off-roader’s values.
“The Jimny has been loved by customers around the world for nearly 50 years since its launch in 1970,” says Yonezawa. “It became an indispensable part of customers work, life and outdoor activities with its excellent off-road performance and high manoeuvrability.”
Suzuki Australia’s boss Michael Pachota believes that the Jimny is the perfect vehicle to tackle Australia’s hyper-competitive new car market.
“The Jimny is synonymous with the Suzuki brand and to have an all-new model on its way is something worth talking about,” added Pachota. “The Australian landscape will be a true test for the iconic 4WD and I have no doubt it will rise to the challenge.”
Australian prices and specifications will be revealed closer to the car’s local launch later this year.
