American electric car maker Rivian has shown off its answer to the Tesla Model Y.

Dubbed the R2 and R3, the pair of mid-size SUVs are due to enter production in 2026.

The two new models will join the R1S large SUV and R1T pick-up truck in the brand’s line-up.

Both new SUVs features the same cute robot-like face as other Rivians, with oval headlights and a light bar that runs the length of the front bumper.

Rivian says the R2 will have several handy features such as powered rear glass that can drop to help fit in long objects and gear. The first and second rows can fold completely flat, creating a giant cargo space.

The R3 will have a more off-road and adventure focus and it will also spawn a performance version dubbed the R3X.

The R2 has been confirmed for other right-hand drive markets.

Both high-riders will have a choice of two yet undisclosed battery sizes. The bigger battery will deliver a driving range of up to 480km.

It will be available with one, two or three electric motors, with the latter two being all-wheel drive.

Rivian claims the tri-motor versions will be able to sprint from 0-100km/h in less than three seconds.

The brand claims it will be able to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes via a fast DC charger.

It will start the equivalent of $68,000.

Both vehicles will also be able to accept over-the-air software updates.

In the US prices are expected to start at $US45,000 ($68,000).

Rivian founder RJ Scaringe says the new vehicles will open the brand up to a range of new drivers.

“I have never been more excited to launch new products – R2 and R3 are distinctly Rivian in terms of performance, capability and usability, yet with pricing that makes them accessible to a lot of people,” says Scaringe.

“R2 provides buyers starting in the $45,000 price range with a much-needed choice with a thoroughly developed technology platform that is bursting with personality. I can’t wait to get these to customers.”

The R3 will be cheaper than the R2.

Rivian has previously expressed a desire to launch in Australia but hasn’t yet committed.

UK publication Autoexpress confirmed the new R2 will be sold there from 2027. Britain will be the brand’s first right-hand drive market and opens the door to Australian deliveries in the future.

The Federal Government’s proposed New Vehicle Efficiency Standard will further entice new electric-only car brands to Australia as the legislation will penalise car makers for selling polluting vehicles and give credits to makers of zero or low emissions vehicles.

Car brands can then sell their credits to polluting brands for less than the proposed penalties.
