Polestar has given a glimpse of its exciting new electric SUV.

Dubbed the Polestar 3, the large luxury-focused SUV will target the Porsche Cayenne according to the brand.

The Polestar 3 is due to start production in early 2023 with the first cars to appear on the road later that year.

Polestar is tight-lipped on details of the 3, but it has revealed the electric car should have a driving range of more than 600km.

It’ll also have a range of semi-autonomous technology and be the first Google Android vehicle with full over-the-air capabilities. This is similar to Tesla which can update all of its software over the air just like a smartphone.

Australian vehicles are likely to be sourced from the brand’s Chinese factory and the brand is aiming for a global production of 150,000 vehicles per year.

Polestar’s chief, Thomas Ingenlath, said the 3 will have a sporty focus, which is backed up by a dual electric motor set-up providing all-wheel drive grip and potent performance.

“Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age. Our design identity evolves with this high-end large luxury EV, with a strong, individual brand character,” said Ingenlath.

Polestar’s global sales chief, Mike Whittington, recently told News Corp Australia the brand is planning an Aussie electric car assault with three models to head Down Under in the coming years.

Polestar is planning on expanding its Aussie line-up to four vehicles in the coming years.

This includes the Polestar 3, 4 and 5, which will join the current 2 in the Aussie line-up.

The 4 is a coupe-styled medium SUV aimed at the Porsche Macan and Tesla Model Y. The Polestar 5 is a luxury electric sedan, similar to the Tesla Model S and Mercedes EQS.

Polestar has found initial success with its Tesla Model 3 rivalling Polestar 2 and Whittington said the brand could outsell the American electric car maker in the future.

“[Australia is] a very important market for us, the second largest right-hand drive market, we see a lot of growth potential here and we need to make sure our strategy supports that,” said Whittington.

Polestar only recently started deliveries of its 2 sedan, which outsold its rival the Tesla Model 3 in April and May.
