Hyundai reveals details of its new-generation Veloster sports car
The car maker has released a teaser video of its star attraction at this year’s Detroit motor show.
Another go-faster car is on the way from South Korea as Hyundai renews its Veloster for 2018.
The oddball coupe, the only car in the world with two doors on one side and one on the other, is getting a sharper shape and a tighter focus to combat rivals including the Toyota 86-Subaru BRZ twins.
The clearest picture of the Gen2 Veloster has just emerged from Korea in a short video ahead of its first public appearance at the Detroit motor show next week.
Kia had the quick hit of 2017 with its Stinger but Hyundai has a double-punch ready this year with the Veloster and its upscale Genesis G70 sedan, which shares the mechanical platform of the Stinger in a slightly smaller package.
Hyundai will also have the first of its N models — similar in concept to M cars from BMW and AMG models at Mercedes — when the i30 N reaches showrooms in March with pricing from about $40,000 to undercut the benchmark Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The performance push from the Hyundai-Kia group is part of a plan to grow its customer base from cheap-and-cheerful shoppers who are won over with a long warranty.
“The new Veloster is more sporty. It’s based on the i30 but lighter, and both models have independent rear suspension,” says Hyundai Australia spokesman, Bill Thomas.
“We’re getting it in the second half of the year. And, yes, it will continue with the asymetrical three-door layout.”
The new Veloster will be available with both turbo and non-turbo engines, but the big breakthrough will come with the rumoured N model. It has been caught during testing in Europe but there is no official confirmation from Hyundai, despite talk of sales in the first half of 2019.
