A man caught racing through traffic at 200km/h has sensationally told police he “wasn’t speeding”.

NSW Highway Patrol officers spotted the man passing cars at high speed on the M5 Motorway at Riverwood in Sydney’s south west on Thursday night.

Police said the white BMW M3 was travelling at 200km/h in an 80km/h zone on the busy road.

NSW Police said the driver of a BMW M3 was busted travelling at 200km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The vehicle is one of the fastest cars on sale for less than $200,000, able to reach 100km/h in 3.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 290km/h.

The driver, a 37-year-old man from Sefton, allegedly told officers “I wasn’t speeding” when stopped shortly down the road.

Police charged the man with speeding and dangerous driving, suspending his licence on the spot.

Officers were not able to seize the vehicle as it was registered to a business, not the man behind the wheel.

Social media users responding to a police facebook post with details of the incident said “it shouldn’t matter” that the vehicle was registered to a business and “that law needs to be changed”.

Police have busted several drivers for excessive speed on the M5 in the last week, including the rider of a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10 motorcycle who initially tried to flee from officers before pulling over.
