Cupra Born electric car headed to Australia in 2023
The newest European car brand to launch in Australia has revealed one of its most in demand new vehicles will arrive soon.
The newest car brand to arrive in Australia is going electric.
Cupra, which is part of the giant Volkswagen Group, has confirmed its Born electric small hatchback is headed Down Under.
The brand’s global boss, Wayne Griffiths, delivered on his promise last year where he committed to bringing the electric hatchback to Australia as soon as possible.
“I can tell you this morning that Cupra’s first fully electric model – and European Car of the Year finalist – will go into production for Australia in the last quarter of this year and will start deliveries early in 2023,” said Mr Griffiths.
The car has been testing on Australian roads the past few months.
Cupra Australia hasn’t revealed any local details for the Born, but several different variants are available overseas.
In Europe the Born is available with either a 58kWh or 77kWh battery that have a claimed driving range of up to 417km and 548km respectively.
All are powered by a single electric motor, which makes 152kW/310Nm, this is boosted to 172kW in higher-specified versions.
Prices in the UK start at £33,735 ($60,000), which is about $4000 less than the cheapest Tesla Model 3.
If Cupra launches the Born in Australia at that price it’ll be eligible for several state government incentives.
The Cupra brand is preparing to launch in Australia this year with three vehicles: the Formentor and Ateca SUVs and the Leon small hatchback.
The range will cater to a wide range of buyers with a focus on performance and hybrid models.
Prices start at $43,990 (before on-road costs) for the Leon, $50,690 for the Formentor and $60,990 for the Ateca.
Online ordering is set to open next month with deliveries expected to start in July.
The brand’s local boss, Ben Wilks, said the brand has seen amazing interest with about 6500 expressions of interest already.
“This is a remarkable response to a brand that is entirely new to Australia and which is barely four years old,” said Mr Wilks.
The majority of the expressions of interest have been for the Formentor SUV and the Born electric car.
