BYD Yangwang U9 filmed jumping over road spikes while self-driving

The tech in this EV supercar is something straight out of a Bond film and police are going to hate it.

Insane footage shows car jumping potholes

It’s the kind of vehicle you’d expect to see in a Bond film - a fast car with inbuilt tech that allows it to jump obstacles.

But for booming Chinese EV maker BYD such a car is very real and they’ve even provided a demonstration of the wild feature.

A video released by BYD showcases the Yangwang U9 hypercar driving unmanned as it jumps over several obstacles.

The U9 received plenty of attention in 2024 thanks to its electronically-controlled suspension which allows the car to transform the way it drives.

And if the new video was anything to go by that attention was warranted.

BYD's electric supercar can jump over obstacles.

According to BYD, the vehicle is capable of leaning into corners, resisting body roll, resisting weight transfer during heavy braking or acceleration and, as showcased in the new video, jumping off the ground.

The first obstacle it encounters in the clip is a wide, 2.5m-long pothole filled with water. As the EV approaches the hole travelling at 120km/h, its Disus X suspension system launches the vehicle in the air, travelling more than 6m while airborne and clearing the ditch.

The next obstacle, however, might not be amusing to police.

The $360,000 sports car is seen leaping over a field of road spikes that sit about 3.5cm off the ground.

While the car has proven it can fly (literally), the electric hypercar has other seriously impressive stats.

It uses four electric motors – one powering each wheel for all-paw grip – to make an outrageous 960kW and 1680Nm, which is about the same as 10 Toyota Corollas combined.

BYD claims it can complete the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint in 2.3 seconds and has a top speed of 309km/h. In November 2024, Yangwang U9 achieved a 7:17.9 Nürburgring lap time.

It might fall foul of other EV users come charging time, though.

It has 800-volt architecture and can charge from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in 10 minutes. The supercar also supports dual charging to boost its charging rate but will need to occupy two supercharging spots.

Initially the car will only be sold in China and the boss of BYD’s Australian importer Luke Todd has previously poured cold water on the Yangwang brand arriving Down Under any time soon.
