A learner rider has been caught doing extreme speed in Sydney

An L-plate rider has had an embarassing and expensive first day on the road, as NSW Police clocked him doing a crazy speed in a built-up area.

A man has been nabbed by police doing more than double the speed limit on his first motorcycle ride.

NSW Police say the 23-years-old motorcycle rider was caught travelling in excess of 120km/h on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge on Sunday night.

The Anzac Bridge at Pyrmont in the inner city has a speed limit of 60km/h.

The novice rider from Western Sydney told Police that he had purchased the motorcycle the previous day and this was the first time he had ridden on the road. Learner riders are not allowed to exceed 90km/h in NSW.

He was hit with a $2547 fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and had his licence suspended immediately for six months. Police also suspended the registration of his Yamaha MT07 for three months.

The learner approved motorcycle costs about $12,000 and has a top speed of about 210km/h.

NSW Highway Patrol also caught a 22-year-old driver from south-west Sydney at the same time. The P1 licence holder was also caught driving a Mitsubishi Lancer at more than 120km/h in the 60km/h zone.

The Yamaha MT-07 is approved for learner riders.

He was hit with a $2547 fine, lost his licence for six months and had the vehicle’s registration suspended for three months.

Last year police caught a motorcycle rider was caught doing 224km/h on the M1 motorway near Helensburgh south of Sydney on Sunday morning. The speed limit on this section of road is 110km/h.

At the time police were unable to impound the motorcycle.

Police are unable to impound a vehicle because if a vehicle is registered to a business or someone other than the rider or driver is caught breaking the law.
