Mazda has confirmed 700 limited-edition models, in celebration of its 100th anniversary, will come to Australia.

News Corp's Car of the Year finalists revealed

Japanese car makers Mazda have confirmed 700 limited-edition models – upgraded in honour of the brand’s 100th anniversary – will come to Australia.

The range, which celebrates a century since Mazda was first founded in Japan on January 30, 1920, will feature 12 models, with limited numbers of each available.

“We’re all incredibly proud to celebrate Mazda’s 100th anniversary by being able to offer these special vehicles to our customers,” Mazda Australia Director of Sales, Jarrod Gieschen, said.

“We’re grateful to have a loyal and passionate customer base in Australia and to say thank you, we’ll be offering those that register their interest the first opportunity to secure their vehicle order.”

Mr Gieschen said the cars will look “elegant and striking on the road today” and “serve as a proud Mazda collector’s item tomorrow”.

The designs draw inspiration from a model that was never offered in Australia – the brand’s first-ever passenger car, the R360 Coupe.

“Developed in 1960, the R360 Coupe was responsible for launching the humble Hiroshima-based former cork manufacturers into the automotive world, setting a benchmark in reliability and a commitment to drive that lives on to this day,” the company said in a statement.

“While the R360 never officially made it to Australia, it was the willing participant in a gruelling 1962 reliability test run, covering the 1500km round trip from Perth to Esperance on a variety of unsealed country roads and outback scenery, taking it all in its stride.”

The special-edition models will feature a two-tone red and white theme similar to the high-grade R360-Coupe.

Finishes will be in a Snowflake White Pearl Mica, contrasted with Burgundy leather seats and 100th Anniversary badging embossed on the head restraints.

Similar badging will also appear on the front fender, key fob, hub caps and burgundy floor mats.
