Toyota’s new C-HR small SUV is locked in.

The Japanese brand has whipped the covers off its new coupe-SUV ahead of its arrival in Australia early next year.

It’ll be sold alongside the similar sized and conventionally styled Corolla Cross SUV in Toyota’s booming SUV range.

This generation C-HR will be hybrid only, ditching the petrol engines from the current model.

“Our customers are demanding more and more hybrid models and this all-new C-HR is the first Toyota in Australia to be offered with hybrid-only powertrains. At the same time, it also delivers the extensive safety, distinctive style and premium features they want from a contemporary SUV,” said Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s head of sales and marketing.

The new C-HR maintains the previous model’s eye-catching styling with a sloping coupe roofline, high window line, edgy panel creases and flashy alloy wheels.

It’ll be offered in three model grades: GX, Koba and GR Sport.

The GX and Koba will use a 1.8-litre petrol engine and electric motor to make a combined 103kW delivered to the front wheels.

GR Sport variants use the new 2.0-litre hybrid set-up found in the Corolla Cross SUV to make a combined 145kW. Dual electric motors – one on each axle – provide all-wheel drive grip.

Toyota hasn’t revealed fuel use figures yet, but said the new hybrid set-ups are designed to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.

Sustainability is front and centre for the next-generation small SUV with double the amount of components made from recycled materials, including a new seat fabric made from recycled plastic bottles.

Toyota claims a new panoramic roof improves head room by 30mm. Back seat headroom and vision is one of the current weak points of the current generation.

There will be a big 12.3-inch central display and higher grade models are due to come with a fully digital driver display.

Toyota Australia will reveal full details closer to the car’s launch date.
