Porsche is planning big things for its next electric car.

The German brand has revealed details of its coming Macan electric SUV, which is due to launch in 2024.

It will be built on the giant Volkswagen Group’s new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which will underpin a wide range of vehicles.

This platform first debuted on the Audi A6 e-tron concept in 2021 and it brings some massive advancements in performance and driving range.

Two electric motors – one on each axle providing all-wheel drive grip – make a whopping 450kW and more than 1000Nm. This is almost twice as much as the Macan S that packs a twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine.

Porsche hasn’t confirmed 0-100km/h times, but it’ll likely be extremely fast.

By comparison the electric 560kW/1050Nm Porsche Taycan Turbo S can hit 100km/h from a standstill in 2.8 seconds.

The electric Macan will have a massive 100kWh battery. Its driving range isn’t known yet, but the A6 e-tron concept has a claimed range of more than 700km with the same sized battery and electric set-up.

A range of more than 700km is better than most petrol cars and beats all electric cars currently on sale in Australia.

It’ll be fitted with the most up-to-date 800V charging technology, which will be able to accept more than 270kW of energy via high-performance chargers.

According to the English publication Autocar, the Macan’s battery will have a special skill. It can boost charging speeds for slower chargers by splitting its 800-volt hardware into two 400-volt units.

The Macan is also expected to deliver a sharp driving experience thanks to adaptive suspension and steering that requires fewer degrees of turn, making it easier to tackle tight twisting roads.

Porsche has also been spied testing its new electric Cayman and Boxster sports cars.

The brand announced its small performance cars would ditch petrol power for good from 2025.

“By the middle of the decade, we want to offer our mid-engine 718 sports car exclusively in all-electric form,” Porsche boss Oliver Blume said earlier this year.

Porsche previewed the electric sports cars in 2021 with its hardcore Mission R concept that had 800kW of power and a top speed of more than 300km/h.

An electric version of the large Porsche Cayenne SUV is expected to follow soon after, then a zero-emissions version of the Panamera sedan in 2026.
