This automotive giant is set to change the automotive landscape in Australia when it launches this game-changing car with a very attractive price tag.

Volkswagen’s much hyped ID.4 electric SUV is coming to Australia next year and it’s set to be priced to succeed.

The first few examples have landed down under to allow potential buyers to get up close and personal with the zero emissions machines.

The ID.4, which was crowned the World Car of the Year in 2021, is the same size as popular mid-size SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Volkswagen Australia expects big things from the ID.4 and a big part of that comes from its likely price tag of about $62,000 drive-away according to Volkswagen Australia Passenger Vehicles director Michal Szaniecki.

“You can easily compare ID.4 to Tiguan R-Line [price], so it’s going to be a natural transition from current SUVs to EVs,” said Mr Szaniecki. “It’s a really attractive price.”

If VW follow through on the price parity with the top of the range petrol-powered Tiguan it’ll undercut rivals such as the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5. It potential success is also helped by the fact the 162TSI Tiguan R-Line is the highest selling variant currently.

The ID.4 will also benefit from various state government incentives such as the NSW’s government $3000 rebate and the waiving of stamp duty.

VW says it’ll cost the same as the range-topping petrol Tiguan SUV – about $62,000 drive-away.

It packs a 77kWh battery that is good for more than 500km of electric driving range and boasts interior space similar to a much larger SUV matched to cute good looks.

It has a single rear mounted electric motor making 150kW/310Nm. It can sprint from 0-100km.h in 8.5 seconds.

It also accepts up to 125kW from a DC fast-charger, so a 10-80 per cent battery top-up takes 34 minutes. This is slower than key rivals.

The arrival of the ID.4 Down Under is a big change of direction for the German brand, which only last year said it had no plans to bring the car to Australia. Instead it was prioritising EV supply to markets where governments have legally binding national emissions targets.

“It has taken the past six months to convince HQ that Australia is ready,” said Szaniecki.

“We tried to make the case very strongly that the Australian market is ready. It’s not only that the legislation is changing, which is very helpful, but the demand is changing.”

One of the key selling points to head office was the fact that Volkswagen’s electric cars are the most Googled EVs in the country, showing that Aussies were very interested in the brand’s offerings.

“Australia is now really a priority for the group … and will not be left behind.”

The ID.4 isn’t the only electric vehicle coming from Volkswagen next year. Joining the ID.4 is the ID.5 SUV, which is effectively the same vehicle but with coupe-like styling.

VW Australia expects production for our market to start in the middle of the year with the cars arriving soon after.

The high-performance, dual motor ID.4 GTX version is also slated for Australia, but there is no firm date for its arrival.

The cheaper and smaller ID.3 will join the line-up at a later date according to Szaniecki, but the longer range electric cars are the priority for Australia.

VW expects more than half its portfolio to be fully electric by 2027.
