The Korean brand has confirmed it will add hybrid power to the line-up for its city-focused SUV, which is likely to arrive locally in 2023.

The hybrid version will join electric, petrol and sporty N Line versions in its line-up. Hyundai hasn’t mentioned if its red-hot Kona N will be given an encore performance.

The new SUV brings big news for fans of the current Kona EV, which is one of the top-selling electric vehicles in the country.

All variants will share the same “EV-derived architecture”, which means it’s likely to have vast improvements over the current Kona EV.

The electric-derived architecture means there is a flat floor because there is no mechanical link between the front and rear axles such as a transmission tunnel.

The wheels can also be pushed to the corners as there is no engine or exhaust, making way for a cavernous interior. The batteries are all stored under the floor, helping to deliver a low centre of gravity for flat cornering.

Hyundai says the interior has grown in both length and width compared to the previous version.

There will be a choice of electric, hybrid or petrol power.

All the Kona variants will share a futuristic electric car design similar to the Staria van.

This includes a svelte silhouette and head and tail lights that stretch the entire width of the vehicle.

The electric version borrows several styling features from the Ioniq 5, such as pixel graphic details on the intake grille and rear bumper.

It also has plenty of chrome and black exterior highlights to help it stand out from the crowd

Hyundai claims the new Kona will have a huge cargo space and several hi-tech features such as dual 12.3-inch displays for the infotainment and instrument display that is currently found in the Ioniq 5.

Hyundai will reveal more local details in the coming months.
