2023 Cupra DarkRebel concept revealed

A new European brand has revealed a head-turning new sports car that is unlike anything else on sale and it could become a reality soon.

Emerging brand Cupra has debuted a striking new concept that points to a future halo car.

The DarkRebel electric concept car made its debut at the 2023 Munich motor wearing bold styling and promising sporty performance.

Sven Schuwirth, chief operating officer of Cupra, promises the car will “drive like it looks”.

He hinted the car could share its architecture with the new electric Porsche Cayman and Boxster.

Those Porsche EVs are due in showrooms by 2025.

Schuwirth says the brand is aimed at younger buyers and not many young people can afford expensive cars unless they are sons and daughters of billionaires. With that in mind Cupra would be aiming to keep the radical sports car’s price in check if it enters production, but the cost will still be significant.

“If we get the car then it would be [the most expensive car on sale],” he says.

“It would not make sense to go for a €200,000 ($330,000) car, I think it needs to be significantly below €100,000 ($160,000) for sure.”

If it enters production it will be the brands most expensive car.

Cupra claims the design for the DarkRebel was the result of more than 270,000 online configurations made by fans of the Spanish brand.

The dreams of thousands were turned into a radical looking all-electric two-seat sports car in a wagon body.

The provocative design is all jagged edges, wild aerodynamic elements and triangular daytime running lights that are made up of three smaller triangles.

Cupra chief executive Wayne Griffiths says the DarkRebel’s purpose is to prove future electric cars can be “sporty, sexy, and emotional”.

He says for the moment the DarkRebel is just a show car but it could become a reality as they “don’t do show cars they can’t do.”

The Cupra DarkRebel concept was revealed at the 2023 Munich motor show.

Cupra hasn’t revealed what would power a production version of the DarkRebel, but it would need two electric motors and all-wheel drive to have the performance to match its looks.

The Spanish brand also showed off a near-production version of the Raval, which is Cupra’s version of VW’s ID. GTI concept that also made its debut at the Munich show. The Raval is expected to launch in late 2025 in Europe.

For now the Raval isn’t on the radar for Australia, with the company instead focusing on launching the Tavascan electric SUV.
