2023 BMW i7 electric car coming to Australia

There are few cars on sale today that will pamper passengers quite like this new luxury star from one of Germany’s car making giants.

The international electric car arms race is charging ahead.

BMW has revealed its new fully-loaded i7 electric luxury sedan that’s headed to Australia this year.

The zero-emissions limousine promises game changing driving range and a multitude of hi-tech features.

It doesn’t come cheaply, though, priced at $297,900 (before on-road costs). It joins BMW growing range of electric vehicles that includes the iX3 and iX SUVs and the i4 sedan.

The i7 will have a driving range of more than 600km.

Power comes from a pair of powerful electric motors – one on each axle providing all-wheel drive – that combine for 400kW and 745Nm, making it more powerful than top flight performance machines such as the BMW M3.

It can complete the sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds.

An enormous 106kWh battery provides a driving range of up to 625km, which surpasses most electric vehicles on sale today.

BMW has focused on using recycled materials in its most luxurious model.

The floor coverings are made from synthetic yarn produced from recycled nylon fibres including old fishing nets.

There is extensive use of recycled plastics used in the door panelling and front grille surrounds among others areas.

Recycled plastic bottles have been used to produce the fabric that coats the ceiling and the pillars in the new model, too.

BMW has packed the i7 with plenty of luxury features and the back seat is the place to be.

The rear seats recline with an “Executive Lounge” feature that provides calf support and a folding centre armrest.

There is a panoramic glass sunroof and 39-speaker stereo with 4D audio.

BMW isn’t content with simple iPad-style screens for back seat passengers and has instead added an huge 31.3-inch panoramic touchscreen that extends down from the roof.

The German brand dubs it the “Theatre Screen” and it transforms the second row seats into a private cinema.

In the front seats there is a curved digital instrument display and a head-up display that projects easy to rear vital information onto the windscreen.

The seats are wrapped in a combination of supple leather, Merino wool and cashmere upholstery.

BMW provides a five-year subscription to the Chargefox fast charging network and an at home wallbox charger.

The i7 can accept a charging rate of up to 195kW, which is below the 350kW rivals from Porsche and Audi can accept.

At its maximum rate the i7 can add about 170km of range in 10 minutes or go from 10-80 per cent in 34 minutes.

The at-home wallbox charger will most likely give a full charge overnight.

The i7 also comes with six years of servicing included, but BMW only covers its vehicles with a three-year warranty, well below the industry standard five-year/unlimited km guarantee.

The i7 will be joined by a petrol-powered version of the 7 Series this year, too.
