A European small car has been given some all-important upgrades that make it one of the most competent cars in its class.

Volkswagen has boosted the appeal of the Polo hatchback by adding more safety and tech features.

Due to arrive in showrooms from May, the updated Polo brings less choice, with just two regular model grades as opposed to three.

The entry-level Life variant is priced from $25,250 (before on-road costs) when equipped with a manual transmission. Adding a seven-speed dual-clutch auto adds another $3000.

This represents a steep price rise over the current cheapest version that is priced from about $25,800 drive-away with an automatic transmission.

The manual Polo Life is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine making 70kW and 175Nm. Auto versions score a more powerful tune making 85kW and 200Nm.

Volkswagen claims both versions drink 5.4L/100km.

Some of the new standard features include more sophisticated auto emergency braking that now detects cyclists as well as cars and pedestrians, lane-keep assist that stops you wandering out of your lane and front and rear parking sensors.

Inside there is an eight-inch central touchscreen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A wireless device charging pad and an eight-inch digital instrument display are standard, a rarity in this vehicle segment.

The Polo Style is priced from $31,250 and has the same 85kW/200Nm engine and auto combination as the Life variant.

It adds comfort sport seats, a bigger 10.25-inch digital instrument display, ambient lighting and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Style grade also brings radar cruise control, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Polo GTI is making a return to showrooms priced from $38,750.

It’s powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine making 147kW and 320Nm.

The GTI brings a number of upgrades including a sports steering wheel and seats wrapped in traditional tartan cloth print.

Multiple driving modes further enhance its appeal.
