Australia has a new weekend adventure machine.

Volkswagen has revealed its compact camper, the Caddy California Maxi.

Priced from $54,990 the small van turns into a weekend getaway machine that can sleep two in comfort, with plenty of storage options.

The rear seats fold down into a double bed and the windscreen, doors, tailgate and sunroof all have darkening curtains to aid sleep.

There are two ventilation grids for the front windows, which also have built-in fly screens to enhance airflow during the night.

There are two storage bags under the rear windows and drawers under the front seats.

The campsite is taken care of thanks to a fold out table and two chairs.

Volkswagen Australia’s director of commercial vehicles, Ryan Davies, says the Caddy California Maxi gives Aussies a way to explore their own backyard while they are locked out of travelling abroad.

“We know our Australian customers love a Volkswagen camper, that’s been seen recently with the resounding success of our Multivan California, and with the previous generation Caddy Beach,” says Mr Davies.

“With the new generation Caddy we have an opportunity to once again offer a turnkey customer solution, that is every bit a Volkswagen. Just in time for Australia’s expected return to summer road-tripping,” he says.

Power comes from a turbocharged diesel engine making 90kW and 320Nm, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto.

Inside there is a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 8.25-inch touchscreen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and plenty of device charging options.

The Volkswagen Caddy California Maxi is available for order online with the first deliveries expected at the start of next year.
