2022 Porsche Macan Australian details revealed

The vaunted German brand has revealed Australian details of its potent new SUV due to arrive later this year, which comes with red hot performance.

Porsche is powering up its cheapest model.

The German maker has detailed its updated Macan SUV that comes with potent new engines and performance, but customers will bear the cost of it.

The entry-level Macan remains reasonably priced at $84,800 (before on-road costs) a rise of $500.

Porsche has added increased performance to its Macan range.

It scores a more powerful four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 195kW, up 10kW from the previous version.

This new engine shortens its 0-100km/h time from 6.5 seconds to 6.2 and raises its top speed by 7km/h to 232km/h.

The mid-spec S variant ditches the 260kW turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit from the current version for a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 making an impressive 280kW.

It can now go from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, a big improvement on the current version’s 5.3 second sprint time. Top speed has been raised to 259km/h from 254km/h.

The S version is now $5000 more expensive.

That big performance boost doesn’t come cheap, the Macan S is priced at $105,800, or $5000 more than the outgoing version.

The updated Macan range has no Turbo variant, so the GTS is now the range topper. It is priced from $129,800, a rise of about $17,000 compared to the current price.

It now has the same performance as the outgoing Turbo version with a menacing 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine making a hefty 324kW, a rise of 44kW, which enables it to hit 100km/h from a standstill in 4.3 seconds. Top speed is 272km/h.

A reworked centre console headlines the interior tweaks.

Porsche is working on a fully electric Macan, which is currently undergoing real world testing and is expected to launch in 2023.

The all-electric Macan will be built on the company’s new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which will underpin a wide range of vehicles.

This platform was recently debuted on the coming Audi A6 e-tron concept at the Shanghai motor show.

The GTS replaces the Turbo at the top of the range.

One of the biggest advantages of this new platform is its ability to maximise battery space. The A6 e-tron concept has a huge 100kWh battery, which gives the vehicle a claimed range of more than 700km on a single charge.

Porsche’s goal is for the Macan electric to be the sportiest vehicle in the segment and it will use a range of testing measures to ensure this happens, including a mix of simulated and real world testing.

This all-electric version could sit atop the range and wear the Turbo badge.

The updated petrol-powered Macan gets a range of styling tweaks including a reworked nose and larger wheels.

Inside a new centre console layout and the use of touch surfaces instead of conventional buttons are the main features of the update.

The new Macan is expected to arrive in local showrooms towards the end of the year.
