Mitsubishi has revealed more details about its “all-new” Outlander SUV due to hit showrooms later this year.

The Outlander is of vital importance to Mitsubishi, as it competes in the ultra popular mid-size SUV segment against vehicles such as the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5. It’s the brand’s second most popular model behind the Triton ute.

The next-generation Outlander brings some big improvements with increased tech and safety features along with modern styling and a bump in power.

The Outlander is built on an all-new platform developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.

Prices will start at $34,490 (before on-road costs) for the two-wheel drive Outlander ES with five seats – which is about $5000 more than the outgoing version – and rise to $49,990 for the Exceed Tourer.

Buyers can choose between five grades: ES, LS, Aspire, Exceed and Exceed Tourer.

The ES is available with either five or seven seats – all other models come with seven-seats only.

Most grades have the choice between two- and all-wheel drive, but Exceed and Exceed Tourer are all-wheel drive only.

Mitsubishi has ditched the old petrol and diesel engines in favour of one 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 135kW/245Nm and matched to a gearless CVT automatic. Those outputs are up by 11kW and 25Nm over the outgoing version.

The new petrol engine sips between 7.5-8.1L/100km depending on specification.

A plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander will arrive next year.

Reworked styling gives the Outlander more road presence. The chunky design includes a large front grille and plenty of body creases, along with sharp looking big alloy wheels.

All models come with a nine-inch infotainment display that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Aspire grade and above score a modern looking 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and head-up display.

The layout has been altered to simplify the Outlander controls with climate functions maintaining easy to use physical buttons and dials.

A short and stubby gear changer and a rotary driving mode selector free up the centre console.

More expensive models get luxe items such as heated seats, leather upholstery and a premium Bose stereo.

Mitsubishi has focused on safety and driver aids. Auto emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-keep assist and radar cruise control are standard on all models. Rear cross-traffic alert with auto braking is fitted to all models above ES.

All Mitsubishis are covered by a 10-year/200,000km warranty contingent on owners getting their vehicle serviced at a Mitsubishi dealership every time. Otherwise it reverts to a five-year/100,000km guarantee.

This deal is sweetened by a 10-year capped-price servicing program.
