2022 Mazda BT-50 XS and SP added to the range

The Japanese brand has announced it will soon be bringing a cheaper version of its BT-50 workhorse ute to Australia.

Mazda is bringing a new value-packed, tradie focused BT-50 ute to showrooms this January.

The entry-level BT-50 XS is available as a two-wheel drive single-cab chassis or as a dual-cab ute with the choice of two- or all-wheel drive.

When the XS arrives it’s expected to significantly undercut the current entry-level BT-50 XT single cab-chassis, which is priced at about $43,600 drive-away.

The cheaper model ditches the 140kW/450Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine and replaces it with a smaller 1.9-litre turbo unit making 110kW and 350Nm.

All XS models are equipped with a six-speed auto and they are rated to tow up to 3000kg, 500kg less than versions with the bigger engine.

Steel wheels replace more expensive alloy rims to help keep costs down and give the ute a more workman like appearance.

The Mazda BT-50 was co-developed with the Isuzu D-max and shares the same underpinnings.

This latest move follows a similar announcement by Isuzu, which revealed its mechanically identical entry-level D-Max SX due at the start of 2022.

Mazda buyers should expect a similar discount to this model, which is priced from $31,200 (before on-road costs) or about $2000 cheaper than the former entry-level Isuzu D-Max.

The BT-50 XS is well-equipped with plenty of mod-cons such as a seven-inch touchscreen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is complimented by digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

Safety is top-notch with auto emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert all standard.

Mazda is also adding a new fully-loaded BT-50 SP variant.

This version brings tough guy looks combining plenty of gloss black exterior highlights, 18-inch black alloy wheels, sports bar and a manually operated tonneau cover to beef-up the BT-50 SP’s street appeal.

There is plenty to like inside with luxury features such as heated front seats and leather seats.

Mazda will reveal prices closer to the vehicle launch date early next year.

Mazda Australia boss Vinesh Bhindi is excited to expand the reach of the BT-50.

“As we move towards the Brand-New BT-50’s second year, we are already focused on evolving the product and offering wider customer choice, which is a hallmark of our business,” says Bhindi.

“The new Mazda BT-50 SP model brings a strong, sporty aesthetic with impressive equipment levels, while the new 1.9-litre turbo-diesel drivetrain delivers a highly capable entry point into the BT-50 model range.”
