Genesis GV60 unveiling

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury offshoot, has revealed pricing and details for its GV60 all-electric compact SUV that is due to land in local showrooms this September.

It’s the first of three electric vehicles from the South Korean luxury brand due this year. The others are the electric G80 limousine and GV70 mid-size SUV.

Genesis is bringing two GV60 variants to Australia, both are all-wheel drive and have considerable performance.

The regular AWD version is priced from $103,700 (before on-road costs) and is powered by two potent electric motors combining for 234kW and 605Nm.

This is matched to a sizeable 77.4kWh battery that delivers a 470km driving range.

An AWD Performance version is priced from $110,700 and uses two more powerful electric motors to make a total of 360kW and 700Nm. These outputs rival high-end petrol muscle from brands such as Mercedes and BMW.

It has the same size battery and a slightly shorter claimed driving range of 466km.

Both have high-capacity 800-volt charging capability, which allows them to accept rapid charging up to 350kW.

Genesis claims the battery can go from 10 to 80 per cent of charge in 18 minutes.

The GV60 comes with plenty of hi-tech features such as “Vehicle to Load” capability that allows you to power appliances and items such as air conditioner and camping equipment from the car.

Both variants have a driving range in excess of 450km.

The GV60 – unlike the electric GV70 and G80 – is built on a dedicated electric car platform, which means there is no petrol-powered version and the car was designed for zero-emission power only.

It is built on the same modular platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 electric vehicles.

This electric platform brings several advantages including a more spacious cabin thanks to the removal of any mechanical link between the front and back such as the transmission tunnel that usually cuts through the centre of a vehicle.

Electric motors take up much less space than an internal combustion engine, which allows engineers to push the wheels to the vehicle’s corners again creating more interior space.

The GV60 has more room between the front and rear wheels than some seven-seat SUVs.

The GV60 comes with a five-year unlimited km warranty and the brand guarantees the battery for eight years.

Electric cars often have a low centre of gravity that makes for an engaging drive.

Genesis will also cover the first five years of servicing and gives owners 10 years of roadside assistance and satnav upgrades.

To make charging more convenient the company lets buyers choose between a complimentary five-year subscription to the Chargefox network or the installation of an at home charger.
