2011-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee safety recall issued
A serious safety recall has been issued for more than 43,000 cars but owners may have to wait a long time to get their faulty vehicle fixed.
Jeep has issued a safety recall for its popular Grand Cherokee family SUV and Chrysler 300 sedans.
More than 43,000 vehicles are affected by a manufacturing issue that could result in a loss of power while driving.
In further bad news for affected owners Jeep Australia currently does not have spare parts to fix the issue immediately.
The recall is precautionary and Jeep Australia has no reported incidents in Australia.
Vehicles built between 2011 and 2022 are affected according to the official recall notice posted by the federal government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and Arts.
The safety issue stems from a manufacturing defect that could result in a failure in the fuel pump.
If this happens, failed component debris could enter the fuel system and that could cut off the fuel supply to the engine, resulting in a loss of power while driving.
The notice says a loss of power while driving could increase the risk of serious injury or death to the driver, vehicle occupants and other road users.
Jeep Australia said owners would be sent a follow-up notice when the parts were available, and owners could organise a repair free of charge.
Affected owners can contact Jeep Australia on 1800 075 397 or at auscustomercare@stellantis.com.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee, launched late last year, is not affected by the recall.
Jeep also recalled a small number of Compass SUVs last week.
In this instance the vehicles had the wrong towing capacity labels on the driver’s side door and tow bar.
The towing capacities labelled did not match the approved maximum towing limit and if the driver attempted to tow a higher capacity than approved it could result in a serious accident.
Jeep sales took a battering at the end of the past decade as reliability issues and poor customer service turned Australian buyers off.
Since then the brand has started to rebuild its reputation, significantly reducing the number of recalls and customer complaints.
Sales have slumped again this year, though, as supply constraints bite.
