LEXUS, the brand typified by conservative sedans and SUVs and solid reliability, is aiming to break the mould.

The RC F Track Edition, unveiled by Toyota’s luxury offshoot at the Detroit motor show, continues the sporty trend pioneered most notably by the LFA supercar and LC sporty coupe.

Lexus has turned up the dial on its V8-powered performance coupe, boosting performance and refreshing the looks.

Lexus has worked hard to reduce the vehicle’s weight by fitting a carbon-fibre roof and bonnet, titanium muffler and tailpipes and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.

Employing a new launch control feature, Lexus is aiming to trim its 0-100km/h split to about 4.0 seconds.

Lexus vice-president Koji Sato says the RC F has undergone constant development.

“These models help further distinguish the F brand by offering fast, durable, highly capable performance cars that rely on a range of technologies to help make their performance accessible to drivers of all skill levels,” says Sato.

Power comes from a 5.0-litre V8 (351kW/530Nm), which is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.

Several exterior design elements enhance the vehicle’s aerodynamics. A highlight is the new wing that increases the downforce dramatically for greater stability at higher speeds.

The Lexus RC F Track Edition is due in Australia in May.
