2024 Lexus LBX small SUV revealed

This popular premium car brand has taken the covers off its newest model, which is likely to be its most affordable car in its line-up.

This small car is a big deal for Lexus.

The new Lexus LBX shapes up as the smallest model in the brand’s history, a compact crossover that gives the brand an alternative to vehicles such as the Audi Q2.

It would succeed the compact, Toyota Prius-powered Lexus CT hatchback as the entry point in Lexus showrooms.

Based on the Toyota Yaris Cross compact SUV, the new Lexus LBX combines compact dimensions with a sophisticated three-cylinder hybrid engine.

The motor sends 100kW through an electronically controlled CVT transmission to a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive traction.

New exterior styling continues Lexus’ shift away from the divisive “spindle grille” front end treatment used in recent years.

Lexus promises the little car will deliver the refinement customers expect, thanks to “the use of heavy sound-suppressing materials”, along with vibration absorption panels and special adhesives that separate it from Toyota.

The three-cylinder engine has a new balancer shift, larger mufflers and softer engine mounts to make sure it feels more premium than the Yaris Cross.

On the inside, a 12.3-inch digital dashboard is the largest we’ve seen in a modern Lexus, and a 9.8 inch central touchscreen swerves around the odd infotainment trackpads and controllers Lexus has experimented with.

Customers can choose from 50 colours for the cabin’s mood lighting, along with 14 illumination themes.

Lexus says it lowered the driver’s seat to improve headroom.

The model is primarily intended for sale in Europe.

The manufacturer’s local arm has not locked in an Australian debut for the LBX, which is under consideration, according to a statement released by the brand.

“Lexus Australia continues to assess models that may be suitable for the needs of local customers, with the LBX no exception,” it said.

“A decision on LBX will be made at a later stage.”
