Kia safety recall: Cars at risk of engine fires

A major Australian car brand has issued recalls for more than 100,000 vehicles due to a defect that could cause fires. Are you affected?

The Kia Cerato is among 10 Kia models being recalled for safety issues.

Kia Australia has issued a major recall affecting more than 100,000 vehicles due to a serious defect that could lead to fire of the car’s anti-lock braking system, even when the car is parked and switched off.

The recall impacts up to 10 Kia models.

The issue stems from a fault in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), this safety system controls the Anti-lock Braking (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control.

When moisture enters the HECU, it could cause an electrical short circuit increasing the risk of a fire in the engine compartment.

The 2013 Kia Sportage is on the list.

Kia is contacting all known owners of affected vehicles by direct mail.

Owners of affected vehicles should contact their nearest Kia Australia dealership for a free inspection and repair.

Kia recommends avoid parking the vehicle near flammable materials until the issue is resolved.
