Land Rover developing automatic driver’s door

NEW technology from the British maker is bringing a big change to cars allowing drivers to complete this essential task hands free.

The tech is initially being trial on a Range Rover Sport.

Jaguar Land Rover is making it easier to go forth and prosper.

The British maker is in the process of testing its new driver’s door that opens and closes automatically.

The tech, which was once the domain of sci-fi television, is now fairly commonplace but it is finally being applied to vehicles.

It uses a range of motion sensors and keyless car technology to detect the driver as they walk towards or away from the vehicle opening and closing the door like an invisible valet. The door can also be opened via gesture control.

Former Royal Marine Commando Mark Ormrod is testing the Jaguar Land Rover automatic door technology.

The door is closed by the push of a button located on the ceiling, meaning you don’t have to lean out and reach for the door.

Radar door sensors can detect objects in its path and stop the door from closing when it shouldn’t. The door can be programmed to automatically lock as you leave.

Disabled drivers will be one of the main benefactors, according to Land Rover, making it easier for them to get in and out of the vehicle.

The company has enlisted the help of Invictus Games athlete and former Royal Marine Commando Mark Ormrod — Britain’s first triple amputee from the Afghanistan conflict — to test the technology.

“This innovative Jaguar Land Rover technology would be such a benefit to me and has real power to change lives for those who face problems getting in and out of the car,” says Ormrod.

Auto driver’s doors will make it easy for those with disabilities to enter their vehicles.

“Opening and closing the car door may seem like such an insignificant task to many people but sometimes it’s the small, everyday obstacles which people take for granted that are most frustrating to overcome for those living with disabilities.”

The technology could also be an important feature for future autonomous vehicles, providing access for those using the vehicles for ride-share purposes.
