But in a meditation on the future of the media, he says good journalism has never been more important and will always have a future.

Dorsey, often likened to a young Steve Jobs (Apple co-founder), said “the practice of journalism never goes away”.

“It’s just how you utilise it and continue to provide the narrative that is critical to any democracy,” he said.

“I feel the conversation has shifted too much in terms of the paper going away versus the practice and profession going away.

“The profession is more needed now than ever and so I would love to see the conversation shift to ‘how can we make the profession more impactful and more powerful, independent of medium’ because medium is always going to change — even Twitter.”

Dorsey told News Corp Australia that he is looking down under for inspiration to devise the next big thing in social media or tech apps since Australians had such an appetite for new devices.

“Australia is definitely very, very interesting,” he said.

“We are going to pay a lot of attention to the market there.”

Yesterday in London, he launched a free software app Square Register globally that upgrades a smart phone or tablet to replicate a small business suite from acting as a cash register to providing up-to-the-minute analytics based on sales, stock movement and sales peaks.

The product is targeted at mum and dad businesses.
