Tricky road rule quiz leaves drivers scratching their heads

Some drivers have discovered they don’t know the road rules as well as they thought after a tricky quiz left them scratching their heads.

After a car accident: your rights & rules

A tricky online road rule quiz has left some motorists seriously confused after trying to figure out who has right of way in an uncontrolled intersection.

Western Australia’s Department of Transport posted the road rule quiz to their Facebook page, generating a lot of debate over the correct answer.

“You know the road rules — now is your chance to prove it,” the post read.

“In what order do the cars need to go?”

Underneath the question was a picture of three cars travelling towards each other on an uncontrolled three-way intersection.

Have a look at the picture and see if you can figure out the order (the correct answer is below).

There are no clear line markings or signs signalling which driver should go first.

The picture shows the grey car intends to continue travelling straight ahead, and the red car travelling in the opposite direction wants to turn right across the path of the grey car.

There is also a blue car coming from the other side of the intersection that wants to turn right into the lane the red car is currently in.

Many people agreed that, despite the lack of markings or signs, the grey car had right of way.

“Blue gives way to both, silver gets right of way,” one person wrote.

“If anyone doesn’t know the answer to this basic question they should hand their licence back,” another added.

Some users agreed the grey car should go first but blue would be next after that.

“Silver, blue then red. All roads have the same priority, so silver goes straight and red needs to give way to blue from the right,” one person claimed.

“Blue gives way to silver, red gives way to silver and blue, so silver, blue then red,” another agreed.

ANSWER

Transport WA soon put an end to the debate, confirming the correct sequence was grey, red and then blue.

“Great to see so many of you get this one right,” they said.

“At a uncontrolled three-way intersection you must give way to all vehicles travelling on the continuing road.”
