THE people of Iceland love optical illusions so much they have put one right in the middle of the street.

While the 3D optical illusion of a crosswalk in Ísafjörður might seem like a bit of fun, it has actually been created as a way to shock drivers into paying attention.

It is hoped when drivers see the extremely convincing “floating” crosswalk, they will be forced to hit the brakes.

This isn’t the first time such an idea has been used, with environmental commissioner Ralf Trylla stumbling across the concept while researching for novel ways to slow down traffic speed.

He said the concept had originally come from New Delhi — the capital of India.

Mr Trylla said it only took a couple of weeks to gain all the necessary permits from the police and transport authority, however the municipal council has not decided if more 3D crosswalks will be added to the city. According to those involved, the concept has been a success in other countries.

And while it’s not 3D, India also had an “authentic” zebra crossing and one that has melted.
