Toyota HiLux range expands with three new models
The top-selling HiLux has a trio of new models to counter tougher and more up-market rivals due this year.
A trio of new Toyota HiLux utes will launch in the second quarter of this year to help the model remain Australia’s most popular car.
Toyota has responded to the imminent arrival of everything from the Ford Ranger Raptor to the Mercedes-Benz X-Class by launching the Rogue, Rugged and Rugged X variants.
Four-wheel-drive utes are the fastest growing segment in the country and mum-and-dad buyers are increasingly wanting more luxury and/or more performance.
The $54,440 SR5 heads the HiLux line-up for now and is the most popular version in the range as increasing numbers of private buyers enter the ute segment.
The three new variants will move the game up in terms of looks and/or off-road ability.
The Rogue is intended to be a premium version. It drops the wheel-arch panels for a smoother look but picks up the new hexagonal grille, front bumper and revised fog lamps.
The Rugged has a standard steel bull bar while the Rugged X tops the trio with a winch-compatible bar, alloy bash plate, black grille, snorkel, LED driving lights, rock rails and front and rear recovery points.
Toyota sales and marketing vice president Sean Hanley says HiLux buyers increasingly want additional features and spend more on accessories than any other car the company sells.
“These new vehicles will enable them to make a statement with advanced toughness, added capability, practical comfort, first-class safety and the in-built strength that makes HiLux the indisputable No. 1,” Hanley said.
“HiLux Rugged X is a no-compromise vehicle for those seeking adventure with a robust and capable vehicle that makes the ultimate statement: work hard, play harder. Rogue is for people who want refinement and capability, enabling them to go for weekend adventures and do it in style. Rugged is about toughness and off-road performance _ an ideal vehicle for getting off the beaten track,”
The launch comes as Ford prepares to launch its Ranger Raptor and Holden has teamed with HSV to develop the Colorado SportsCat. The Nissan-Navara based Mercedes X-Class is another potential rival and will launch in Australia in April.
