Turbo Subaru hints at next-gen WRX

Cult classic tipped to return with sharp new styling in the near future, paving the way for a new chapter for the global performance hero.

The next-generation Subaru WRX should look a lot like this.

Subaru teased enthusiasts with a “prototype” version of the next Levorg wagon at the 2019 Tokyo motor show, though it’s clear the Subaru Levorg that took centre stage is very close to what will appear in showrooms.

The Tokyo show car gives the best clues yet as to the look of the next WRX, Subaru’s ageing pocket rocket that shares its front half with the Subar Levorg.

This, with a boot and a big spoiler, could be the new WRX.

Sharp angles and a hexagonal grille dominate the nose while more muscular wheel arches build on the Impreza DNA.

Powered by a new 1.8-litre horizontally-opposed turbocharged engine the Levorg also continues with a top-mounted intercooler that calls for the trademark WRX bonnet scoop. It should outgun the 125kW and 250Nm outputs of the current entry grade, but might not top the 2.0-litre GT’s 197kW and 350Nm muscle.

There’s no word whether the current model’s divisive CVT automatic transmission continues in the wagon, though it seems likely as Subaru has invested heavily in stepless transmissions.

Subaru has also packed in more tech, part of the goal to allow occupants to “go further with more comfort, safety and enjoyment that makes them feel like time is flying”. The EyeSight twin cameras step up the active safety capability, as do new high-def maps and better connectivity.

Safer and more efficient than before, it remains to be seen whether the Levorg is quicker than the outgoing model, which offers a surprising turn of pace in top-end form.

Expect the next WRX to be fitter than that, packing at least 200kW to stay ahead of performance rivals such as Volkswagen’s Golf GTI.
