The most popular second hand cars revealed
Second hand cars might come with a few more reliability risks compared to new cars but there is excellent value to be had and these brands are in high demand.
There is one car brand Aussie drivers trust over all others.
New research from Gumtree Cars has revealed the most popular second hand cars in Australia.
Toyota dominates the field with five of the top 10 most wanted used vehicles.
But despite the Japanese brand’s popularity it isn’t the most desired used car on the market.
That honour goes to the Mazda3 small car with 11 per cent of those surveyed naming it their most wanted. This was followed closely by the Toyota Corolla at 10 per cent.
The two small cars have been big sellers on the new car market for the past decade, which means there is a lot of used stock on the market giving buyers lots of options.
But new car sales success doesn’t always translate to used car popularity. The Toyota HiLux is the top-selling new vehicle but was the ninth most popular used vehicle, while the second best selling Ford Ranger ute didn’t make the top 10.
Used car buyers are still keeping the Holden and Ford rivalry alive with the former family favourite Commodore and Falcon large cars coming in sixth and tenth respectively. This is despite both makers ending local production several years ago.
However, both cars were huge sellers for the past few decades and both are value propositions with older versions selling for the same price as used city cars.
The only luxury car to make the list was the BMW 3 Series, which was the eighth most desired used car according to Gumtree. The German brand’s sedan is known for its sweet driving dynamics as much as its luxury features.
However, the most expensive car on the list is the Toyota LandCruiser. The heroic bush basher has been a favourite for country folk and city families for decades. This is due to its stoic off-road ability, bulletproof reliability and sublime cabin comfort. And because of these elements the LandCruiser holds its value exceptionally well with 2007 models still holding 50 per cent of their original value according to Redbook.
The survey also revealed an interesting nugget on Australian car buying preferences. White was the most popular colour for used cars, followed by silver and blue.
And buyers most wanted tech feature was satnav or wireless device charging, which is standard in a lot of new cars but is yet to trickle down into the used car market en masse.
In the meantime, used car buyers are more than happy to get keyless entry and ignition on their purchase.
