The $300,000 Holden Commodore: another example of Australia’s fastest car, the HSV GTS-R W1, goes up for auction
JUST 300 examples of the HSV GTS-R W1 will be built, but some people lucky enough to buy one are trying to profit from their $170,000 purchase.
WOULD you pay $300,000 for a Holden Commodore?
This is not just any Commodore but a super-rare HSV GTS-R W1, the fastest and most powerful car ever built in Australia.
Holden reportedly had about a thousand people in the queue to buy one — despite the $170,000 RRP — but only 300 are being made.
The last cars are still rolling off the line at HSV’s final assembly facility in Clayton.
But those keen to jump the queue can do so at a price.
A red example — number 36 of 300 — is going under the hammer at Lloyds Auction on the Gold Coast at midday this Saturday.
The auction house claims the W1 will fetch close to $300,000, although so far no-one has paid that much for one.
One example — a white sedan, number 110 of 300 — was reportedly sold by Grays Online in Victoria for $280,000 in September.
Another example — build number 35 with 14km on the clock — was said to have been passed in at a Manheim auction in August after bids stopped at $257,500.
HSV wanted to avoid buyers profiteering from the W1 by selling them undriven and unregistered with delivery kilometres only (most cars listed have less than 30km on the odometer), but there is nothing the company can do to stop the practice.
Bill Freeman from Lloyds Classic Car Division says that if the HVS W1 sells for $300,000 it will set a new record for Australia’s fastest sedan.
