Game changing tech for new BMWs

The German brand is set to be the first car maker to use Apple’s new features, which are set to revolutionise cars forever.

How BMW's Digital Key works

BMWs are getting big ticket tech upgrades.

Apple recently revealed hi-tech new features at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) aimed directly at drivers.

And now BMW has confirmed a vast range of its cars will get the new feature first.

First cab off the rank is Apple’s CarKey feature, which is a digital car key stored in the Apple wallet app on your iPhone or Apple Watch. It works in the same way as Apple Pay, so all users need to do is have the digital key in proximity of the car for it to unlock and enable the ignition.

The key can be shared among five friends or family members, meaning there is no excuse for losing your keys ever again.

And to make sure you are never stranded, there is a power reserve for iPhones which will allow the CarKey to work for up to five hours after the phone has turned off because of low battery levels.

BMW Australia has confirmed the Apple CarKey will be available on new cars from the end of this year.

The digital key will be compatible with nearly all the brand’s models as long as they are built after July 1.

Apple has also added a long awaited feature aimed at the growing number of electric car users.

Now when electric car users put in their destination in Apple Maps, the digital directory will show them the optimal route based on the vehicles range and the location of charging stations along the way so drivers can make sure they don’t run out of charge.

This Maps feature will be compatible with the first of BMW’s new electric cars, the i4 due out next year.
