A MOVIE-loving petrolhead has spent $AU160,000 creating his own Interceptor — the iconic car from Mad Max.

Michigan born Dale Walter fell in love with the powerful vehicle when he watched George Miller’s seminal film over thirty years ago in a tiny theatre.

The famous car has featured in several films in the Mad Max franchise, including the latest MadMad: Fury Road, which stars British actor Tom Hardy in the title role.

In 2008, Dale commissioned specialist company Mad Max Cars to convert his 1972 Australian Ford Falcon into the iconic Interceptor — a process which took five years and $AU160,000.

The 50-year-old film fanatic, who designs and builds weapon systems for the US military, even has a replica shotgun and leather jacket, similar to the one worn by actor Mel Gibson in the original trilogy.

“A lot of people ask me what inspired me to build the Mad Max Interceptor,” he said.

“I was sitting there in the darkness in that theatre and they rolled out that car and I turned to my friend and said ‘some day I will own that car’ and he said ‘yeah right’.

“Thirty years later I sent him a picture of me next to the car and it was just such an awesome vehicle.

“When I first saw the car rebuilt I was absolutely stunned, it took them five years to do this but the wait was worth it.

“We spent over $12,000 on the engine alone which was hand built — so a lot of went into that. I was super meticulous about how I wanted the car to be.”

Dale’s car, which has an incredible 450 horse power, is the mirror image of the vehicle from the original 1979 movie and is even fitted with a police PA system.

But the film buff admitted that the highly expensive yet gas guzzling engine means his Interceptor probably wouldn’t fair too well in Miller’s post-apocalyptic world.

He said: “I think it gets six miles to the gallon and you can tell in the second movie Max added those tanks, because this thing sucks gas like its going out of style.”
