New Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 revealed

This vehicle is usually the ride of choice of rappers and the world’s richest people. And the latest luxury instalment packs some truly amazing features.

Mercedes has revealed its new ultraluxury SUV.

The German brand has slapped its Maybach badge on the range-topping GLS 600.

The uber prestige Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 SUV is all about passenger comfort, front and rear.

The new Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 is the brand’s ultimate luxury SUV.

The dash and all padded areas are upholstered in nappa leather and, to add to the luxurious ride, the seats have climate control and massage functions.

Mercedes has even developed a special fragrance for the GLS 600, to be dispensed as part of an optional package.

The rear seats are made for lounging.

Customers can ditch the usual rear bench seat and replace it with two luxurious recliner seats separated by a centre console.

This console can be fitted with folding and extendible tables and a refrigerator with space for champagne bottles. Buyers can even option silver champagne flutes.

Rear occupants are protected from the outside world by two electronically controlled sun blinds on the rear windows.

Dual screens mean back seat customers can watch different movies.

The rear entertainment set-up has two 11.6-inch displays — the pampered passengers can play films or music of their choice or browse the internet.

The prodigious 1590W Burmester audio set-up powers 27 speakers.

The Maybach can have a set of silver champagne flutes.

The rear experience is further enhanced by running boards that swing into place when the door opens to help passengers step in and out — until needed, these are concealed behind the side sills.

Pampering isn’t the sole purpose of the GLS 600. There is still plenty to enjoy for those who prefer to drive rather than be driven.

The Maybach is powered by a twin-turbo V8.

Power comes from a twin-turbo V8 that makes an impressive 410kW and 730Nm.

Benz has added a mild hybrid set-up that powers electrics and the starter motor. The tech can also provide brief bursts of overboost adding 16kW and 250Nm.

The nine-speed automatic sends power to all four wheels.

The Maybach is due in Australia late next year.

Mercedes says the GLS 600 can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 250km/h. This is impressive for a machine that weighs about 2800kg.

As well as the comforts, Mercedes has packed the big high-rider with active driver safety features.

The first deliveries are expected in Australia late 2020.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t revealed prices. The Maybach is expected to start from about $350,000 before on-road costs, on par with rivals such as the Bentley Bentayga ($335,000) and coming Aston Martin DBX ($347,000).
