Man left angry after $959,000 luxury Rolls-Royce plunges into sinkhole

AN UNLUCKY motorist in China has been left furious after his luxury Rolls-Royce plunged into a sinkhole. The whole thing was caught on film.

$750,000 Rolls-Royce swallowed up by sinkhole in Chinese street

WHEN you have a car worth just shy of $A1,000,000, the last thing you want to do is get involved in an accident — especially one that isn’t your fault.

So spare a thought for the owner of the Rolls-Royce that was plunged into a sinkhole when it opened up on a street in northeastern China over the weekend.

Since being posted on the Chinese streaming site Pear Video, footage of the luxury vehicle plunging into the three-metre wide hole has gone viral.

“I was waiting at the traffic light here and was just about to start the car at the turn of the green light when the road suddenly caved in,” the owner of the car said in the video, reported South China Morning Post. The man added that he had paid $A959,000 for the vehicle.

Despite being angry at his expensive car being destroyed, the man was able to escape without injury.

Crazy sinkhole swallows car whole

Cars falling into sinkholes is nothing new, with an American couple suffering similar heartache after finding their Toyota Camry down the bottom of a sinkhole earlier this year.

Jordan Westerberg said when he left his car he had never expected to return to it upside down in the middle of a flooded sinkhole.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Westerberg told St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “We could’ve been in the car. It’s a compact car. It’s not like it’s heavy.”

The large hole about 6 metres deep and 2.5 to 3 metres wide took up a whole lane of a street in downtown St. Louis.

Although it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the collapse, footage of the void shows a broken underground water main gushing water.
