“The recovery operation has been conducted in an exceptionally challenging environment and has reached the point of requiring specialist equipment not available within the Australian Defence Force,” reads the update.

“Defence will engage a commercial contractor to assist with the completion of the recovery operation,” which expected to be carried out on or around Tuesday.

“The commercial operator will work closely with the Australian Defence Force in support of the Queensland Police Service and Defence Flight Safety Bureau investigations.”

Unidentified human remains were found near the suspected crash site within the first week of searching.

Australia’s Taipan fleet was grounded in the wake of the MRH-90 crash.

Two new Black Hawk helicopters have since arrived in Australia, which will eventually total a force of 40 of the American-made choppers.
