Four hand grenades dropped off in box at busy Nerang Police station
A CYCLIST delivering a tupperware container with “lost property” led to Gold Coast police calling the bomb squad and evacuating the station.
POLICE are hunting a man who handed in four replica grenades into the Nerang Police Station yesterday.
The man entered the Cotton Street station at around 8.45am and dropped a Tupperware container at the front-counter while people queuing in front of him were being served.
The man told police the box contained lost property, before fleeing the police station on a bicycle.
Police were shocked when they checked the box and found four hand grenades inside.
The box was immediately rushed to the carpark and the Explosives Ordinance Response Team confirmed the box contained three flash-bangs and one smoke grenade.
The EORT advised there was minimal risk to damage or injury from a potential explosion as the grenades were in a worn condition.
It took around three hours to confirm the grenades were in fact incredibly realistic replicas, according to Acting Senior Sergeant Graeme Reeves.
“It’s something that you couldn’t readily get over the counter in Queensland, whether these items were available on the internet, we still have to determine that,” he said.
“And that’s why we would like to speak to the gentleman who brought the items to the station.
“We’re trying to identify him just so we can find out where these items originally came from.”
A police spokeswoman said officers did not believe this was a deliberate threat, nor were they seeking to charge the man involved.
The man is described as being caucasian in appearance, aged in his 60s, around 175cm tall, with short grey hair and a medium build.
Investigations are continuing.
