Lego Master Builders big project

THERE are dream jobs and then there is Chris Steiniger’s profession.

For the last eight and a half years, Mr Steiniger has been a master builder for Lego.

As the name suggests, his job is to use Lego to bring designs to life.

His latest project is to build the southern hemisphere’s biggest Death Star out of Lego bricks to celebrate international Star Wars day on May the 4th (Be With You).

When it comes to a project like this, Mr Steiniger said months and months of planning is involved.

“It all starts in the ideas phase where we come up with the biggest and craziest ideas we can to inspire and entertain Lego and Star Wars fans internationally,” he told news.com.au.

“Then we have to figure out a way to actually build the creations — that’s the time consuming part.

“The Death Star took about five months with about 12 people in the model shop working on it.”

Mr Steiniger said while it might sound hard, the process is actually pretty easy.
“Believe it or not we’ve never had a model fail catastrophically on us before,” he said.

“Not to say we haven’t had small minor issues but that’s why we are Master Builders, we know how to fix any problems before they become a big one.

“That’s also part of the joy of Lego isn’t it? If you don’t get it right the first time you can just take it apart and start again.”

After solving how to build the Death Star, Mr Steiniger will be building it from scratch once again with the help of the public down at Westfield Warringah Mall in Sydney.

“The Death Star model is going to be huge — the final build is going to use over 210,000 Lego bricks and will take three full days of building to complete,” he said.

“It will end up measuring around 7.2m in circumference, 2.4m in diameter, and weigh 545kg.”

Because the project is so large, it will have to built and destroyed on the floor of the mall.
What a time to be alive.
