Lexus has unveiled a hoverboard it has been working on for the past 18 months
A NUMBER of efforts have been made to make the hoverboard dream a reality with no great success ... until now.
THE 1989 motion picture Back to the Future II predicted the world would have hoverboards in 2015.
A number of efforts have been made to make this dream a reality, but none have really made the grade.
However, it appears luxury car maker Lexus could be onto something after recently showcasing a video of its hoverboard creation.
Executive vice president of Lexus International Mark Templin said the company had been working on the project for the past 18 months.
“At Lexus, we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible,” he said in a statement.
“That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project.
“It’s the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination.”
The hoverboard has a sleek design including a polished wooden deck and functions by using liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets.
While impressive, the hoverboard has limitations and will only work when placed above a metal track or surface.
For those wondering how thehoverboard seems to working in a concrete skate park in the video, Lexus has confirmed there was a metal layer underneath.
The car manufacturer insists technology is authentic and can be ridden, although there is no release date as of yet.
Let’s just hope Nike can get Marty McFly’s self-lacing sneakers finished by the time it hits the streets.
