KATSU uses drone to graffiti one of New York City’s biggest billboards
AN established New York street artist has used a drone to graffiti one of the city’s most prominent billboards.
HAVING already established himself as one of New York City’s most prolific graffiti writers, KATSU is now working to showcase the future of street art.
The graffiti artist recently rigged a Phantom drone with an aerosol can and then proceeded to vandalise one of New York City’s most prominent billboards.
The brazen move saw the artist paint a giant red scribble across Kendall Jenner’s face on the Calvin Klein billboard, which stands six stories tall.
“It turned out surprisingly well,” KATSU told Wired.
“It’s exciting to see its first potential use as a device for vandalism.”
KATSU said vandalising the board using traditional methods would have been near impossible and while his method took less than a minute to complete, he was still cautious.
“It was a bit tense,” he said.
“Seventy per cent of the concentration is in maintaining this equilibrium with the two dimensional surface while you are painting.”
KATSU has previously been vocal about his efforts to make graffiti drones commercially available and he hopes this is a step in the right direction.
“As an artist and a graffiti writer, I want to push to make the drone a tool that I can use, but it’s also a bit of a statement,” he told Motherboard.
“You know, I hope that I put enough of the elements together so that I can release this thing soon, in all its open-sourceness, to allow graffiti writers and other artists around the world to rapidly start experimenting and iterating this and start playing with it.”
