Inside the secret luxury survival bunkers for millionaires
THESE luxurious underground apartments feature a pool, theatre and even a shooting range. They can also withstand a nuclear apocalypse. But they’ll cost you.
THESE luxurious underground apartments feature a pool, theatre, and even a shooting range.
They can also withstand a nuclear blast.
It may sound like we’re talking about a classified government project, but that’s not the case at all.
The apartments, called “Survival Condos”, are the brainchild of engineer and software developer Larry Hall and are designed to offer residents “extended off-grid living in the event of a major disaster or emergency”.
And if you think you’ve got a chance of getting your hands on one, think again, because you will need at least a spare $1.72 million.
For those who are ready and able to spend a little more, $5.1m will give you even more bang for your buck and a lot more space in which to survive a disaster in true style.
Anyone lucky enough to get a key to a unit in the former Atlas Missile Silo in rural Kansas will be able to survive a nuclear apocalypse in absolute luxury.
The complex, which can keep around 70 people alive for five years, also features a “hydroponic” vegetable garden, 25,000 gallon water tank, generator, general store, wind turbine and even a room for minor surgery.
There’s also a climbing wall and gym for exercise, and a dog walking area.
Residents will be protected by military grade security, biometric locks and walls up to 2.7m thick, more than 53m underground.
Mr Hall would not elaborate on specific security details, but added the complex had “full military grade security that encompassed both lethal and nonlethal measures to ensure the safety of the residents and the facility no matter what the threat”.
And if there is some sort of apocalyptic disaster, then don’t worry because the complex has its own water supply, with a 75,000 gallon reserve tank and an air filtration system capable of withstanding nuclear, biological or chemical attacks.
Mr Hall told KMOV that from an investment point of view, it was better than life insurance and he had received expressions of interest from all over the world.
Apartments in one of the former silo’s two buildings have already sold out, and construction in the second is currently underway.
Mr Hall stressed his clients were not your typical “survival nuts” but rather they are “successful, educated and well-to-do individuals who simply want peace of mind in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.”
There’s certainly no doubt about that “peace of mind” part.
Mr Hall said his secure Luxury Survival Condo and Resort was one of the strongest man-made structures ever created.
The bunker’s walls are made from epoxy-hardened concrete. It was built back in the 1960s at the height of the Cold War to house and protect the Atlas Nuclear Missiles.
Mr Hall added that while it was designed to withstand a nuclear blast, he and his clients actually shared concerns about many potential man-made or natural disasters, including the breakdown of society or extreme civil unrest.
Mr Hall said buyers wanted to know they could “protect themselves and their families when the government was no longer able to do so”.
The half-floor and full-floor units range in size from approximately 84 to 169 square metres.
According to the Survival Condo website, individual owners form an “extended family” where everyone shares the responsibilities for group security, operation and maintenance of the facility, education, cross training, aquaponic farming, medical support, and as many other tasks as possible to create a high quality of life while operating in “survival mode”.
Residents are able to come and go as they please, and can either use their apartments as their primary residence or second home.
There’s also a small catch though. Buyers will need to prove they have the financial resources, interest, education and experience to participate in the shared tasks of survival under difficult circumstances.
Prospective buyers will also have to have good values, and will undergo criminal screening.
Oh, and in the event of a disaster, there are three contingency plans in place to ensure residents can get to the facility. Of course, any such plans will only be discussed with potential buyers.
