Bizarre new design Sydney’s next exhaust stack revealed
The design for Sydney’s next giant exhaust stack has been revealed. And the reaction has been fierce.
This week the designs for Sydney’s next giant exhaust stack to grace Sydney’s motorway network have been revealed — and social media has had a field day.
It has been described as a portaloo, a boot and even a badly packed parcel according to locals on a Balmain Facebook group.
Construction of the stack will take place on Victoria Road in Rozelle in the city’s inner west, where the new Westconnex motorway tunnels will meet the Iron Cove Bridge. And, a sneak preview has been published on an architect’s website.
Artist and architect Chris Fox said it was inspired by the “geomorphology of the state’s waterfalls” – especially those in the Blue Mountains.
One person on Facebook wrote sarcastically: “No doubt it will win an award. Architectural awards have become a farce. Architecture is dead. The more boring and plain it is, the higher the chance of it winning an award.”
Another said it was “no more ghastly than most modern architecture”.
But not everyone agreed. As one Facebook user said: “yeah, nah, I actually like it”.
