Anthony Bourdain will transform his International Food Market into a scene from Blade Runner
ANTHONY Bourdain has unveiled his plans to transform his International Food Market into a scene from the 1982 dystopian classic Blade Runner.
A CELEBRITY chef winning praise from geeky sci-fi fanatics? It seems like a difficult task, but it appears Anthony Bourdain was up for the challenge.
The TV personality used the World Street Food Congress to unveil his plans to transform his International Food Market in New York City into a scene from the 1982 dystopian classic Blade Runner.
As Bourdain was unable to attend the conference, his business partner Stephen Werther delivered the news.
When presenting the floor plan for the market, Mr Werther described it as being inspired by “the set decor of Blade Runner and the vibrant back alleys of Tokyo”.
Mr Werther said the duo wanted to create an internationally-inspired street food extravaganza.
“Hopefully, it will be a place where New Yorkers go to discover many of the destinations that Bourdain has brought into our homes on TV for the last decade,” he told Uproxx.
Mr Wether said the layout was more chaotic than the current hawkers markets found in New York City.
“It is meant to be crowded and chaotic because that’s what hawker centres should be,” he said.
“It should activate all of your senses.
“It is supposed to be a mashup of foods, styles, smells, tastes and visuals.”
Unfortunately, foodies and sci-fi fans will have to wait to attend the Blade Runner-inspired market — it is not due to open until 2017.
