Bill Gates leaves Microsoft company he co-founded to focus on philanthropy
After stepping down as CEO to sit on the board of the company, Bill Gates is finally leaving Microsoft, for a very good reason.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates will leave the company to focus on his philanthropic efforts.
The multi-multi-billionaire who spent many years as the richest man in the world stepped down as Microsoft CEO in 2000 to focus on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but remained on its board of directors.
He transitioned out of a day-to-day role in Microsoft in 2008 and served as chairman of the board until 2014.
He co-founded the company alongside Paul Allen in 1975 and grew it into one of the biggest companies in the world.
He has also been serving as a technology adviser to current Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, a role that he is expected to continue even though he has now left the board entirely.
Gates will also step down from the board of fellow billionaire Warren Buffett’s holding company conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway.
His reason for scaling down his work is the same as it was in 2000, to focus on his philanthropic work through the foundation that shares his and his wife’s name.
Bill Gates net worth is estimated at more than $US100 billion ($A162 billion).
